About the Caracal (Caracal caracal)
The Caracal Cat can be found throughout much of Africa, residing in both open savanna and thicketed woodlands. The caracal is easily identified by the long tuft of dark hair on the tip of the ear, extending half the length of the ear. Most caracals are solitary animals, preferring to hunt alone, but have been spotted in pairs on occasion. The Caracal has a wide range of sounds for a feline specie, including hissing, growling, calling and the commonly known purring sound. They also have been observed making a barking sound, which could be interpreted as a warning signal to predators or other cats. Males reach a length of over 40", with a tail often exceeding 12 inches, and an average weight of 25-30 lbs.
