About the Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)

The Channel Catfish is the most abundant species of catfish in North America. These fish can thrive essentially anywhere from small rivers to large natural lakes. They inhabit holes and crevices in the banks of water bodies where they avoid predators and strong currents if they inhabit a river. They are a musky grey color with whiskers near their mouth used for smelling and tasting food. This is important because they are often found on the bottom, where the water is dark, and the bottoms are murky with mud. An average channel cat you will most often catch will be 2-4 lbs but have known to grow as large as 50 lbs. It is the most abundant catfish species in North America and the most widely fished.
