Animal description

About the Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii)

The Cutthroat trout is a member of the Salmonidae family and is native to the cold water stream of the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin of North America. These trout get their name from the distinct red coloration of their lower jaw or what we refer to as our throat. The Latin name clarkii comes from the man who discovered the fish. William Clark, or what most people know him and his partner by "Lewis and Clark," discovered it on their expedition westward. Among the subspecies of cutthroat trout, we see a variation in size due to environmental nutrient availability and geographical location.
