About the Barren-Ground Caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus)

As summer approaches, the caribou start one of the largest mammal migrations on the planet, as they travel more than 600 miles south, often along the same path. Females leave several weeks before the males, who follow with yearling calves from the previous breeding season. These large herbivores have sturdy hooves with a hollowed-out center, which can be used as a scoop for digging through the tundra, as well as a paddle for swimming the frigid northern waters.
