About the Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus)
The hooded merganser is a small duck species and is the only extant member of the genus Lophodytes. The hooded merganser has a very distinctive look. Both males and females have large feather crests on their heads. However, the males have black plumage with a deeply contrasting white crest and white stripes in their wings. Females are more of a dark tan color throughout their plumage. The hooded merganser can be found in Washington State, British Columbia, Idaho, and New England.
