About the Red Drum Fish (Sciaenops ocellatus)

The Red Drum Fish are composed of deep red color on their back fading into a white on their belly. They also have a unique eyespot near their tail fin that separates them from other sea fish. This is believed to be found on the tail fin as a defense mechanism to attract predators to attack the tail and not the head of the fish. This is a species of game fish found along the Atlantic coast of the United States stretching from Massachusetts down to the Gulf of Mexico. They are bottom-feeding fish meaning they feed on macroinvertebrates such as crabs, shrimps, and mullets. When breeding the females are known to lay as many as 1.5 million eggs.
