About the Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis canadensis)

The Spruce Grouse is a popular game-bird native to most of Canada and the northern U.S. Their plumage is typically a hybrid stripe/speckle pattern of black and white, while the female shows more brown in it's coloration. The spruce grouse is well known for its defense against predators. By relying on its incredible camouflage and standing motionless until the curious predator is within several feet of the spruce, the grouse will sudden take off in a flurry of foliage and feathers, often taking its predators off guard and giving itself that extra second to reach safety.
