About the Yak (Bos grunniens)

The yak is a long hair bovine species natively found in the Himalaya region of south-central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau and as far north as Mongolia and Russia. Most yaks are now of the domesticated variety, Bos grunniens, while wild yak are often separately referred to as Bos Mutus. Yaks are heavily built animals with a bulky frame, sturdy legs, and rounded cloven hooves. The Yak (Bos Grunniens) male often weighs 750 - 1300 lbs while the females weight 500 to 550 lbs. Yak physiology is well adapted to high altitudes, having larger lungs and heart than cattle found at lower altitudes, as well as greater capacity for transporting oxygen through their blood. They are the only wild bovids of this size with extremely dense, long fur that hangs down lower than the belly. Wild yaks are generally dark blackish / brown in coloration. However, domestic yak coloration can be quite variable, often having patches of sienna browns and cream. The Yak has relatively small ears and a wide forehead, with dark colored smooth horns. The male's horns sweep out from the sides of the head and start curving forward and inward near the tip, typically range from 19" to 39" in length. Yak physiology is well adapted to high altitudes, having larger lungs and heart than cattle found at lower altitudes, as well as greater capacity for transporting oxygen through their blood.
