About the Canvasback Duck (Aythya valisineria)

The Canvasback is a diving duck, so named because it feeds mainly by diving for tubers, roots, seeds, snails, larvae and pond weed sago. The Canvasback duck has large webbed feet evolved for diving and its unique bill shape helps it dig tubers from the lake bottom. The adult male Canvasback, aka drake, has a black bill, a chestnut red neck and head, a black colored breast, a gray toned back, dark black rump and a black/brown tail. The sides, belly and back of the Drake are white with fine vermiculation - closely resembling the weave of a canvas cloth, for which created the birds namesake.
