About the Greater Rhea (Rhea americana)

The greater rhea is native to the barren plains and sparse woodlands of Brazil and Argentina. This bird is similar in appearance to the Ostrich but much smaller in overall size and weight. The rhea comes to an average height of 3-5 feet and weighs approximately 50 lbs whereas the ostrich is 7-9 feet tall and upwards of 275 lbs in large males. It may strike your interest to know that this bird is capable of feeding on things from insects all the way up to other small birds and lizards. They don’t necessarily select for these food sources they are more often seen feeding on agricultural fields.
