About the Himalayan Tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus)

The Himalayan tahr (or the common tahr) is a large ungulate species found throughout the diverse mountainous regions of the Himalayas. The tahr's coat is usually shaggy brown or reddish brown in appearance. They have small heads with large black eyes, as well as curved horns which grow backward, preventing fatal damage to the tahr during the male's "headbutting" ritual. The tahr has a toed hoof with a rubber-like grip which aids them in navigating the smooth, slippery mountainous surfaces of their habitat.
