About the Mountain Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou)

Mountain caribou are the largest bodied caribou sub-species. Mountain caribou adapted to live in higher elevation, due to the lack of vegetation in their ecosystem mountain caribou herds are considerably smaller than others. Furthermore, mountain caribou do not migrate as much as their cousins. However, they often change elevations as the seasons change. In the summer months, mountain caribou ascends the mountains to avoid biting insects. In the winter they descend to avoid the deep snowfall that covers the vegetation they eat.
