About the Muskox (Ovibos moschatus)

The Muskox can be found in the frozen Arctic and northernmost reaches of Canada, where they graze the frozen tundra in herds of 12-24 members. This very large member of the bovine family can grow to over 1000 lbs searching for lichens, roots, grasses and moss for nutrients. During the summer months, the muskox prefers to dine on Arctic flowers and grasses, preferably near a clean water source. The muskox is almost prehistoric in appearance, as shaggy as a wooly mammoth, with a dark brown coat and massive sandy yellow horns growing downward away from the head and curling back up near the tip. It's hard to spot their heads in all that fur, but their distinctive white mouth stands out for easy indentification!
