About the Peary Caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi)

The Peary Caribou is a subspecies of caribou, native to the arctic islands of northern Canada. This subspecies is the smallest of North American Caribou with females being an average of 130 lbs and males averaging 240 lbs. The caribou have changing coat colors that vary from white and thick in the winter months and a thinner grayish coat in the warmer months. Due to the lack of vegetation these caribou feed primarily on sedges, lichens, and mushrooms. These caribou unlike other subspecies travel in smaller herds that range from 4 in the winter to 12 in the summer.
