About the Pére David's Deer (Elaphurus davidianus)

The Père David's deer is named after Father (Père) David, who observed the original herd in China. The Chinese call this animal "sze pu shiang", which translates to "none of the four". This strange name references the fact that the animal looks like it resembles the neck of a camel, hooves of a cow, tail of a donkey, and antlers of a deer. They are reddish tan in color, and the males grow antlers, often twice a year, while the larger set typically grow in the summer months.
