About the Axis Deer (Axis axis)

The Axis Deer (Axis axis) or "Chital" is a deer species that commonly inhabits southwestern Asian countries like India and Nepal. The coat is typically a pink-fawn color, with similar white spotting that would be found in a North American whitetail fawn. Its antlers (which are shed annually) are usually three-pronged and curve upward in a lyre shape. In the 1860s, Axis Deer were introduced to Hawaii, and now thrive on the Hawaiian island of Lanai, where they graze on grass and easy-to-reach vegetation.
