About the Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum)
The Gila Monster is one of the only known venomous species of lizards in North America and the only one in the US. Although they are venomous, they are not a threat to humans because of their sluggish nature. The Gila Monster can grow up to 2 feet long, while 20% of their body length is their tail. This lizard is found in the Southwestern United States and Mexico. They live in scrubland, succulent desert, and oak woodland but only spend 90% underground in burrows or rocky shelters. The Gila Monster is known to eat small birds, small mammals, frogs, smaller lizards, insects, and decaying meat of dead animals. In 2019, Utah made the Gila Monster its official state reptile.
