About the Sitka Deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis)

The Sitka Deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) is a "Blacktail" deer that is often confused with the common North American Whitetail, though they typically grow much smaller in size. They are found in Alaska and British Columbia (and most of Canada). Their habitat includes everything from the open prairie to deep forests, making them extremely adaptable to a variety of surroundings. Sitka deer have a specialized stomach that allows them to eat plants, shoots, and grass as well as various mushrooms that are otherwise toxic to humans.
