About the Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus)

The bobwhite quail (also known as the northern or Virginia quail) is a ground-dwelling bird native to North America. Surprisingly, the bobwhite gets it's name from its call, not from the white feather coloration on its head. The bobwhite typically sports a salt and pepper chest, with a rich chestnut-red or orange feathering along it's wings and back. The bobwhite, like most quail, are very popular game bird, and are actively hunted all over the U.S. Their diet consists of seeds, insects and flowered vegetation.

About the Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata)

The scaled quail, as one could guess, gets its name from the scale-like appearance of its breast feathers. It is native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States and central Mexico. The white crest can also distinguish the bird on the top of the head, resembling a puffball. They reside in sand sagebrush and shortgrass high plains. These habitats present great opportunities for nesting and raising their brood. Their nests typically contain 9-16 speckled eggs, and when faced with predation, they select to run rather than fly.
