About the Blue Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale)

The Blue-spotted salamander is native to the Great Lakes region and the northeastern United States. These salamanders are distinguished by their blue and white spots running down both sides of their body and tail. They grow to an average of 11in and are typically found in moist deciduous hardwood forests. In this salamander species, the males are smaller than the females but are often seen with noticeably longer tails. They need shallow pools of water that are retained through the summering months to provide optimal breeding opportunities. A single salamander hatch may have up to a dozen eggs, and a single female may lay up to 500 eggs in a year.
